External Inputs
This section explains the various external inputs that can be added to your installation's diagram. These inputs represent the fuels or materials consumed by your installation to manufacture CBAM goods.
The EU CBAM categorizes fuels or materials containing carbon, which can be emitted during combustion or other chemical processes, as source streams. The units where these source streams are processed, such as boilers or kilns, are referred to as emission sources.
Your installation's emissions come from the inputs you use in your production processes. This includes fuels that you burn to generate heat, which release carbon into the atmosphere. Emissions can also come from raw materials that change during chemical reactions, or from intermediate goods that contain carbon and are further processed. Even heat produced in another installation can contribute to your emissions, as the carbon emissions from its production must be accounted for by the installation that consumes it.
Electricity also plays an important role - if it's produced by burning fuels, it adds to your emissions when consumed in your installation. Additionally, emissions from the production of other CBAM goods you use will be included in your total emissions, based on how much of those goods you consume.
However, if your installation produces heat or electricity and exports it to another installation, the emissions associated with that production will be subtracted from your own emissions.
