If you produce [primary unwrought aluminium](docId\:CRIv_piMi6tgFc9WxcYX5), you must include PFC emissions, which will add to your *direct (Scope 1) emissions*.

The gases to be monitored are Carbon Tetrafluoride (CF₄) and Hexafluoroethane (C₂F₆). Emissions from anode effects as well as fugitive emissions are to be included. The method followed by the EU CBAM Regulation is based on the guidance "Aluminium sector greenhouse gas protocol" published by the [International Aluminium Institute (IAI)](https://international-aluminium.org/).

Select the PFC Emissions **Method**

:::hint{type="info"}
Two different methods are allowed: the **slope method **and the** overvoltage method**. Which method you want to apply depends on your installation's process control equipment.

Select the **Technology**

:::hint{type="info"}
When you select a technology, the emission factors for that technology will be pre-filled. These emission factors are provided in Annex III, B.7 of the [CBAM Implementing Regulation](https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/?uri=OJ%3AJOL_2023_228_R_0006#d1e32-113-1). A recommended improvement is to use installation-specific emission factors for CF4 and C2F6, but you can rely on the standard ones in the meantime.

Input the anode effect minutes / cell-day (**AEM**)

:::hint{type="info"}
**AEM (Anode Effect Minutes) **is a measure of the duration and frequency of anode effects in an aluminum smelting process. It is calculated using the following formula:

AEM = Frequency of Anode Effects x Average Duration

- **Frequency of Anode Effects **= Number of anode effects per cell per day
- **Average Duration **= Average duration of anode effects in minutes per occurrence
